धर्मक्षेत्रे कुरुक्षेत्रे समवेता युयुत्सवः |
मामकाः पाण्डवाश्चैव किमकुर्वत सञ्जय ‖
dhṛtarāṣṭra uvāca |
dharma-kṣetre kuru-kṣetre samavetā yuyutsavaḥ |
māmakāḥ pāṇḍavāś ca-iva kim akurvata saṃjaya ‖
“The first Śloka sets the saga on the field of Dharma.
Dharma is how we respond, whatever the situation,
presuming we can sustain our view within the present.
Karma is how we respond, having lost sight of our view, because it’s become obscured by the force of our memories.
Then Karma is the force now driving us through our memories.
So, Arjuna’s Dharma becomes obscured because of his Karma.”

kārpaṇya-doṣa-upahata-svabhāvaḥ pṛcchāmi tvāṃ dharma-saṃmūḍha-cetāḥ |
yad-śreyaḥ syān niścitaṃ brūhi tan me śiṣyas te-ahaṃ śādhi māṃ tvāṃ prapannam ||
नैनं छिन्दन्ति शस्त्राणि नैनं दहति पावकः।
न चैनं क्लेदयन्त्यापो न शोषयति मारुतः।।
nāinaṃ chindanti śastrāṇi nāinaṃ dahati pāvakaḥ |
na cāinaṃ kledayantyāpo na śoṣayati mārutaḥ ||
त्रैगुण्यविषया वेदा निस्त्रैगुण्यो भवार्जुन ।
निर्द्वन्द्वो नित्यसत्त्वस्थो निर्योगक्षेम आत्मवान् ।।
trāiguṇyaviṣayā vedā nistrāiguṇyo bhavārjuna |
nirdvandvo nityasattvastho niryogakṣema ātmavān ||
योगस्थः कुरु कर्माणि सङ्गं त्यक्त्वा धनञ्जय ।
सिद्ध्यसिद्ध्योः समो भूत्वा समत्वं योग उच्यते ।।
yogasthaḥ kuru karmāṇi saṅgaṃ tyaktvā dhanaṃjaya |
siddhyasiddhyoḥ samo bhūtvā samatvaṃ yoga ucyate ||
बुद्धियुक्तो जहातीह उभे सुकृतदुष्कृते ।
तस्माद्योगाय युज्यस्व योगः कर्मसु कौशलम् ।।
buddhi-yukto jahāti-iha ubhe sukṛta-duṣkṛte
tasmād yogāya yujyasva yogaḥ karmasu kauśalam ||
arjuna uvāca |
sthitaprajñasya kā bhāṣā samādhisthasya keśava |
sthitadhīḥ kiṃ prabhāṣeta kim āsīta vrajeta kim ||
krodhād bhavati saṃmohaḥ saṃmohāt smṛtivibhramaḥ |
smṛtibhraṃśād buddhināśo buddhināśāt praṇaśyati ||
yā niśā sarvabhūtānāṃ tasyāṃ jāgarti saṃyamī |
yasyāṃ jāgrati bhūtāni sā niśā paśyato muneḥ ||

ajñaścāśraddadhānaśca saṃśayātmā vinaśyati |
nāyaṃ loko ’sti na paro na sukhaṃ saṃśayātmanaḥ ||
yogasaṃnyastakarmāṇaṃ jñānasaṃchinnasaṃśayam |
ātmavantaṃ na karmāṇi nibadhnanti dhanaṃjaya ||
tasmād ajñāna-sambhūtaṃ hṛtsthaṃ jñāna-asinā-ātmanaḥ |
chittvā-enaṃ saṃśayaṃ yogam ātiṣṭha-uttiṣṭha bhārata ||

उपविश्यासने युञ्ज्याद्योगमात्मविशुद्धये ॥
tatra-ekāgraṃ manaḥ kṛtvā yata-citta-indriya-kriyaḥ |
upaviśya-āsane yuñjyād yogam-ātma-viśuddhaye ||
यथा दीपो निवातस्थो नेङ्गते सोपमा स्मृता ।
योगिनो यतचित्तस्य युञ्जतो योगमात्मन: ॥
yathā dīpo nivāta-stho na-iṅgate sa-upamā smṛtā |
yogino yata-cittasya yuñjato yogam ātmanaḥ ||
yatroparamate cittaṃ niruddhaṃ yogasevayā |
yatra cāivātmanā ’tmānaṃ paśyann ātmani tuṣyati ||
taṃ vidyād duḥkhasaṃyogaviyogaṃ yogasaṃjñitam |
sa niścayena yoktavyo yogo ’nirviṇṇacetasā ||
प्रशान्तमनसं ह्येनं योगिनं सुखमुत्तमम् ।
उपैति शान्तरजसं ब्रह्मभूतमकल्मषम् ॥
praśānta-manasaṃ hy enaṃ yoginaṃ sukham uttamam ।
upaiti śānta-rajasaṃ brahma-bhūtam akalmaṣam ॥
cañcalaṃ hi manaḥ kṛṣṇa pramāthi balavad dṛḍham |
tasyāhaṃ nigrahaṃ manye vāyor iva suduṣkaram ||
ayatiḥ śraddhayopeto yogāccalitamānasaḥ |
aprāpya yogasaṃsiddhiṃ kāṃ gatiṃ kṛṣṇa gacchati ||
tapasvibhyo ’dhiko yogī jñānibhyo ’pi mato ’dhikaḥ |
karmibhyaś cādhiko yogī tasmād yogī bhavārjuna ||
