Yoga Sūtra Chapter Three verse 55

सत्त्वपुरुषयोः शुद्धिसाम्ये कैवल्यम् ॥५५॥

sattva-puruṣayoḥ śuddhi-sāmye kaivalyam ||55||

Equality of purity,
in clarity and animating principle,
is abstraction.

sattva - clarity; the quality of transparency or purity; luminous; honesty; the quality of goodness; material or elementary substance, entity, matter; nature, disposition of mind; being, existence, entity, realitypuruṣa - animating principle, self, consciousness, spirit; a person, man, a human being; peopleśuddha - pure, cleansed, cleared, clean, clear, free fromsāmya - equality, evenness, equilibrium, equipoise, equal or normal state; likeness, sameness, identity withkaivalya - independence, freedom, emancipation, solitude, separateness, abstraction, not connected with anything else; uncompounded, unmingled
