Yoga Sūtra Chapter Three verse 41

श्रोत्राकाशयोः संबन्धसंयमात् दिव्यं श्रोत्रम् ॥४१॥

śrotra-ākāśayoḥ saṃbandha-saṃyamāt-divyaṃ śrotram ||41||

From complete restraint of connection between ear and space;
divine hearing.

śrotra - sense of hearing; earākāśa - space; ether; subtle and ethereal fluid; sky, atmospheresaṃbandha - connection, binding or joining together, close union or association; relationship, fellowship, friendship, intimacy withsaṃyama - complete restraintdivya - divine; heavenly, celestial

Commentaries and Reflections

Commentary by S Ramaswami:

“According to Sāṃkhya the Tanmātra of sound has the medium of space not air.

There are sounds beyond the normal range of hearing.
These can only be heard by understand the relationship between ear and space.
Then one gets divine hearing which refers to subtle sounds and to any sound from the different Loka.

Vyāsa says we are not able to hear these sounds because we are like a deaf person.”
