    Commentaries around

“There is no question that Guru Paramparā is essential for proper teaching,
understanding and practice of all Śāstra, whether Yoga, Veda or Vedāṅga.
It is Paramparā alone that ensures that words of the texts are interpreted correctly.”
    – T Krishnamacharya’s commentary to Yoga Sūtra Chapter One verse 20

“The Guru must judge how serious is the desire and the faith
and then teach the Mantra that he considers most appropriate.
    In any event,
he needs to know that it may be that there will be no positive result,
because a lot depends on the attitude of the student.”
    – T Krishnamacharya

“The belief that the individual can be his or her own teacher is one point of view.”
    – TKV Desikachar Madras December 19th 1988

“Even if one’s Guru says a certain thing will happen and it happens,
that is still Vikalpa, as it has not gone through the necessary progression.
When you take the word of the Guru for authority,
unless you put it through the process of discriminative investigation,
the mere acceptance of it, even if true, because it suits your fancy
i.e. Vikalpa, will not make it valid for you.”
    – TKV Desikachar Madras December 19th 1988

“There is an image in the world today that the Guru has a following
and his students follow him like the Pied Piper.
This is not good. The true Guru shows you the way.
You go your way and then you’re on your own,
because you know your place and you are grateful.
I can always thank my Guru naturally and enjoy the relationship,
but I do not have to follow him around, because then I am not in my own place.
Following the Guru’s destination is another way of losing yourself.
The Yoga concept of Svadharma means ‘your own Dharma‘ or ‘your own way’.
If you try to do somebody else’s Dharma, trouble happens.
The Guru helps you find your own Dharma.”
    – TKV Desikachar
