Sāṃkhya Kārikā verse 48
bhedaḥ tamasaḥ aṣṭavidhaḥ mohasaya ca daśavidhaḥ maha-mohaḥ | tāmisraḥ aṣṭādaśadhā tathā bhavati aṅdhatāmisraḥ ||
bheda - dividing, breaking, splitting, cleaving, rending, tearing, piercing; distinction, difference, kind, sort, species, variety; separation, division, partition, part, portiontamas - obscuring; mental darkness, ignorance, illusion, error; deprived of the eye's light or sight; darkness, gloomaṣṭavidha - eight fold; of eight kindsmoha - delusion; error; darkness or delusion of mind; to say anything that leads to error, to fall into error; loss of consciousness, bewilderment, perplexity, distraction, infatuation, follyca - anddaśavidha - of ten kinds; tenfoldmahā - greattāmisra - darkness; the dark half of the month; indignation, angeraṣṭādaśa - eighteentathā - so, like, after that manner.bhava - re-emerge; coming into existence; birth; productionandhatāmisra - utter darkness; complete darkness of the soul
