The first text that I was privileged to be able to study word by word, verse by verse along with the commentaries of Krishnamacharya and then Desikachar, within the intimacy and vitality of private lessons in Madras from 1979, was the Sāṃkhya Kārikā of Īśvara Kṛṣṇa.

“Sāṃkhya has been fundamental in its influence on the philosophical
foundations underpinning Yoga, Buddhism and Āyurveda.”

Sāṃkhya is said to be a relative of Yoga. In fact they are often paired together when presenting models around the six major schools of inquiry within the Indian tradition.

  • What is the basis for this relationship?
  • How closely are they related?
  • Where do they agree and where do they differ?

These questions will form the base from which an exploration of the fundamental principles within Sāṃkhya and its links with Yoga and especially the Yoga Sūtra will be explored.

“Sāṃkhya proposes a permanent solution to suffering.
If we look and see.
And see what produces what we see.”
– TKV Desikachar

As well as being complete in itself it offers a necessary foundation for those interested in a verse-by-verse in-depth study of the primary Sāṃkhya text, the Sāṃkhya Kārikā of Īśvara Kṛṣṇa, along with the commentaries of Krishnamacharya and Desikachar, through Modules Two and Three.
